Definition and details for hertz:
Hertz (Hz) is a SI derived unit, used to measure frequency. It's dimension is 1/s and is equal to one cycle per second. The name was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 1930, to honor the German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857-1894), who proved in 1887 that energy is transmitted through a vacuum by electromagnetic waves. "Hertz" was adopted by the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in 1960, replacing the previous name for the unit, cycles per second (cps) and its related multiples.
